As the COVID-19 pandemic stretched through a grueling second year, on into a third, demands on every one of us continued to change but certainly didn’t lessen. The emergence of new virus variants as well as pandemic-inflicted stresses like paper shortages and other supply chain disruptions, shipping delays, and the Great Resignation continue to reshape our lives at work, school, and home. At the same time, the need for trustworthy information has intensified—to support public health, to combat racism, to spark effective climate action, and to offer sorely needed research and perspectives on world events. The pandemic years have upended how presses do much of their work, and advancing equity, justice, and democracy in our world demands continued vigilance and effort as well. Despite increased calls for a “return to normal,” all of us still require generous, flexible, and imaginative approaches to meet these myriad challenges.
The Association of University Presses (AUPresses) and its members have continued to adapt and respond to these urgent challenges during another difficult and painful year. Throughout, university presses maintained and demonstrated the benefits they bring to society, to scholarship, and to the university. Our Value of University Presses statement enumerates these benefits. They are the reasons why we do this work and the very rocks we stand on in this turbulent stream of history.

1: University Presses make available to the broader public the full range and value of research generated by university faculty and by scholars outside the academy.
